The label is not standardized
Desert camps use marketing terms differently, so “standard,” “deluxe” and “luxury” do not guarantee a fixed list of facilities. One camp may call a private bathroom luxury; another may include it in every tent. Ask for the actual room type and current photos of the tent you are booking.

Bathrooms and temperature control
Private ensuite bathrooms are one of the biggest comfort differences. Heating matters on cold winter nights, while air conditioning can matter in hotter periods if the camp can supply reliable power. Ask whether climate control operates overnight, not only whether a unit is installed.
Food and common areas
A higher-priced camp may offer more elaborate dining, lounge areas, table service or entertainment, but these are secondary if the basics are weak. Confirm dinner and breakfast inclusions, dietary needs and whether drinks are extra. The best meal is one served at a sensible time after your arrival activity.

Location and atmosphere
A camp that is slightly quieter or set against a clean dune backdrop can feel more special than a more expensive camp surrounded by vehicle lights. Ask how transfers work and whether you can walk safely to a nearby dune for sunrise or stars.
When an upgrade is worth it
Pay more when the added comfort solves a real need: private bathroom, better bedding, heating, air conditioning, more privacy or a higher service level. If you mainly want one night under the stars and are comfortable with simpler facilities, a good standard option may be enough.
How to fit this into your Merzouga stay
Treat the camp as your evening base rather than a checklist item. Arrive with time to settle in, enjoy the light, have dinner without rushing and decide whether sunrise is worth the early start for you.
A practical rule is to combine one signature dune experience with one contrasting activity and one relaxed period. That balance gives better photos, less fatigue and more room for weather or timing changes.
